Hork-Bajir Chronicles Alternate Cover- Aldrea by CharReed Hork-Bajir Chronicles Alternate Cover- Aldrea by CharReed
This is the first half of the alternate fan-cover I'm doing for the Hork-Bajir Chronicles. If this were printed on a book jacket, this would be the back of the book. This is Aldrea, as she is running/skidding down an embankment to check on her family, who she fears is in danger, hence her expression. Next, I'll be working on Dak Hamee for the front. It never made 100% sense to me to have the cover of the Hork-Bajir Chronicles feature an Andalite, so that's part of the reason I made this alternate cover.

I changed some of the intrinsic Andalite features, namely her nose. I never really liked the vertical arrangement of the nose as it was depicted on the covers. I studied cow, horse and other ungulate noses to get a better, more natural, yet still alien look to the nose. As a nod toward the book descriptions of the Andalite nose, I made a dark vertical marking, similar to the cleft below the nose of a dog or cat.

The Hork-Bajir homeworld is surrounded with gigantic trees hundreds of feet tall. They emerge from deep valleys cracked in the planet's surface and grow high into the atmosphere. I tried to make these trees large and imposing, but we may just have to imagine these trees as saplings compared to the really giant ones.

Hopefully you like what I've done so far, keep your eyes peeled for the next update! :)

LOL, you gave her breasts. (I say lol, 'cause on the actual cover she didn't have them and I made a pixel andalite with them mistakenly.)

This is absolutely gorgeous. :)

Yeah, believe it or not, I actually did that on purpose. Even though I'm sure the creators didn't consider it this much, I figured with that "jaw line" on their face, they had a mouth at some point in their evolution. With a mouth on the face, it made sense that they'd be like mammals and had mammary glands. I figured with the continued evolution of their foot-mouths, their face-mouth closed up, but the mammaries remained (though vestigial) maybe due to selective breeding.

Or maybe I'm full of it and I just needed the Andalite to "read" as female! XD

Your call ;D

Nice drawing,t hough I always imagined her tail blade being more triangular than curved, more like a scalpel than a scythe to make it less aerodynamic and a less effective weapon

True! The version you imagine does match the covers a bit more. I keep fiddling with the male/female tailblade designs. One day I'll find a design I really like! :)

I always used to pretend I was an Andalite when I was a kid. The neighbor and my siblings would play too. I miss those days.

I grew up with the Animorphs! I read the first book in 6th grade and I feel the Animorphs were the same age I was throughout the series. Definitely a fun ride through adolescence! :D

I really like the panicked expression on her face and the dynamic pose. The dappled coat pattern is also very nice. The only thing I would say is to maybe adjust her torso a bit so that it doesn't look like she has breasts (though at this angle, its probably just prominent pectoral muscles).

Thanks! I'm glad you like the face and expression. :)

I wanted Aldrea to be indefinable as "female" to the Ani-crowd and non-fans alike. (I've already gotten comments about how she wasn't "girly" looking enough in the chest area from non-fans). I've always kind of envisioned females to have a slightly bigger/differently shaped pectoral muscle from the males, but not overtly so. It's a delicate balance between cannon, biology and being aesthetically pleasing!

Awesome! I really appreciate the life given by the movement in this piece. If I had one minor crit it's the use of mammaries. It would serve no function to a species whose offspring never had mouths.

Thanks!

Well, I thought about it. It's just extra muscle, really. Not functional, since Andalites eat through their feet. I figure at some point in their history, they either ate through mouths (explaining why they have a jawbone also) or it was a trait exploited and bred for via natural selection. Weirder things have happened in the animal kingdom ;)

Lovely. Absolutely gorgeous the way you've captured the Andalite anatomy and breathed life into it. I'd have to say this is the BEST andalite art I've seen on the internet, aside from the books themselves. It's even better than the pics of Ax on the series covers, in my opinion (I was never happy with the way he looked kind of photoshopped together, but I loved the way the andalites looked on the Andalite and Hork-Bajir Chronicles). You've shown the fluidity of her muscles and the anatomy all fits, there's nothing that looks out of place, so she looks believable. And I applaud how you've given you're own touch to her as well, such as the youthful fawn-spots and the nose (which I agree fits better). I have to say, if there was a poll for the next illustrator for the animorphs, I'd vote for you! I can't WAIT to see more Animorphs art! :DD

I can't even handle how fabulous this is. It's beautiful! The anatomy is perfect and the colors and the lighting is just so lovely it makes me HAVE TEARS. And I really like her nose like that, I might have to explore that a little further myself. HMMMN. I also like how you've got the juvenile markings on her. :) And the actiony-ness! There's a very nice fluidity and sense of motion in her pose and the blurring of her legs and the foreground.
Just all-around fabulous. You should do the covers for all the books and get paid well to do so! :D
