A male Andalite! I got an image in my head of an Andalite running full tilt and found an awesome deer photo for reference. One day I’ll actually draw a happy Andalite!
I played around some with the anatomy, most notably changing up the tailblade design to be more aerodynamic. Not the first to do this and it took me the entirety of working on the piece to finally be “ok” with this design. I think Andalites would have thinner tails than portrayed on the covers, to allow flexibility and mobility of the tail to what I’d consider a prehensile ability. I also arranged the bulk of the base of the tail over the croup on the back. If you look at any ungulate, they don’t have thick tails, so I piled all that extra muscle on top of the tail, rather than below (makes more sense anatomically). I modified the stalk eyes to be more clearly “connected” to the main eyes, presumably using the same part of the brain for vision. I modelled the new stalk eye design after slugs and other stalk eyed mollusks. I also added dog-like eye dots for the equivalent of eyebrows on humans. Just try to tell me that a dog’s eyes aren’t as expressive as a humans, just try! And socks! I gave this guy a sock marking on his back leg
No…. I don’t put any thought into these designs at all! Why do you ask?
This Andalite's reaction may mirror my scramble to get some long, patiently awaited updates to you guys once again. I’ve felt guilty about not posting every single week. It’s probably hard to believe, but very true. Every comment made me so happy, yet sad I wasn’t able to squeeze in a page with my busy schedule. I’m now MAKING the time and I’m preparing well in advance. The page I’m working on now is the most ambitious morph scene to date, so I hope everyone likes it!
I’ve been busy, I am now doing full time freelance making pet caricatures and portraits. If you’d like to support myself, and Animorphs (which I do for free!), please check out: PetPicsArt.com [link] and consider commissioning a portrait of your version of Homer!
That is one niiicely defined back. Hahaha. I like the change you did to the stalk eyes/eye connection, that's basically my logic too. I like the thinning of the tail as well, too bulky of a base inhibits that 'whipcrack' speed that their strikes are supposed to have. Tail blade seems pretty curved though? Almost like a stinger. With that kinda blade if they'd want to slice through anything they'd have to aim in a really particular/precise way.
but yeah in conclusion, aw yisssss, Andalite art XD
Haha, you noticed that eh? I was totally inspired by Bouguereau's Birth of Venus (NSW: [link])- that guy in the lower left hand corner of the painting XD
The actual tail blade shape did bother me and I'm still not happy with it. I used a scorpion for reference (as I'm sure you can tell), but I really like the logistics of an over the tail design for the blade as opposed to under the tail, like a scorpion's stinger. It's easier to imagine slicing and dicing with an over the tail design. But I guess it'd take a lot more skill and finesse to fight with a blade under the tail (more precision for sure), which we all know the Andalites pride themselves on! Haha... I may rework it some more in the future
Aww yisss! Only took me a few months, but finally more Andalite art to add to the fanart pile!
And yeah Andalite tails are weeeiiiird. How they're supposed to carry those things around as they run has always been a sticky point for me. When you say 'over the tail' though, do you mean that the inner U, the edge of the blade is facing upward? I'm not sure about the functionality in the slicing with that design. It works with scorpions 'cause they don't slice, they stab.. but when you take the range of strikes an Andalite can make the blade shape makes it more difficult.
Also hey random question but did you use a texture brush on that fur? How'd you render it? I like the belly and that area where the hind leg meets the body, it's really nicely done.
By "over the tail", I just mean when the tail is arcing up over the back, the tailblade is on top of the tail (the opposite of what this piece shows). On a "over the tail" design, when the tail would be lowered, the tailblade would be touching the ground. (Visual example: [link])
I agree about the blade shape, but I always kind of imagined it hacking in a similar manner to a sickle or machete, usually coming from a sideways motion. I imagine the tails are extremely nimble and flexible, allowing it to move in the best way to aid in cutting. I guess I think of it slicing in the same manner as a velociraptor toenail, that sickle shape seems to repeat itself a lot in nature.
I do use texture brushes! I have one for fur that really helps texture the pelt quickly and easily. If you want to PM me your email address, I can send it to you
